Oarfish and Earthquake

Oarfish is a deepwater species and cannot be seen in the surface and rarely seen at all, so Its a rare occurence when you find a giant oarfish washed up on the beach. Some find it as a sign from the sea that a huge disaster is about to happen that the creatures from the deep sea resurfaces.

These huge creatures are often called as the "Messengers of the Sea". Japanese experts said, it was been wahing ashore claiming a sign that an earthquake is about to follow. These creature live 3000 ft below the sea, it means sunlight cannot be seen in this depths. Kiyoshi Wadatsumi said that because they live in the depth of 3,000 ft below, deep-sea creatures are near in the surface of the sea, they are more sensitive in the movements of the active faults than those sea creature who are near the surface of the sea.

February 10 a big earthquake hit Surigao City, thousand of people was hurt and 6 people were dead because of the 6.7 magnitude earthquake. Properties, Roads and infrastructures were damaged because of the earthquake.

Two weeks ago before the earthquake hit Surigao City, they have found dead two oarfish in the beaches of Butuan City and another oarfish was found in Misamis Occidental and later found ashore in Agusan del Norte.

An oceanographer and ecologist Mark Benfield of Louisana State University said that whatever the ocenaographic phenomena which push these animal on shore, The're probably on a large enough scale to affect more than one oarfish.

The sightings of these creature caused fears among residents with the help of social media networks saying that the seightings tend to tell a warning or a bad omen that a disaster earthquake will hit the city.

Oarfish Recorded Sightings

About 20 oarfish were washed ashore in the area of Tohoku, Japan. Where an earthquake and a tsunami strucked wayback 2011.
