Don’t Throw Away Baby's Teeth; It Can Save Your Child’s Life

Did you know that your baby teeth should not be thrown away because it can be used later in life to treat different diseases?

It’s true! Songtao Shi, a doctor from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial research conducted a study that revealed our baby teeth contain on to two dozen valuable stem cells that can be accustomed for treating diseases.

The experts have been researching the impacts of the stem cells on organs like the heart, the brain, the pancreas, and other organs, and their effects when it comes to repairing the possible damage from a certain disease.

Doctor Shi and the team found out that the adult teeth contain one type of stem cells, while baby teeth from kids aged between 7 or 8 contain totally different stem cells.

It was discovered that baby teeth can actually save life, just like the baby’s cord blood can.

This means that, in case you cannot afford banking your baby’s cord blood for stem cells, or in case you have not thought about this on time, now you can do it by saving your child’s baby teeth.

How does it work?

Stem cells are located in the dental pulp of within the tooth, which then regenerates into neurons, bone, and cartilage.

This treatment can be effective for type 1 diabetes because stem cells from teeth can be turned into pancreatic cells which produce insulin.

In order to properly save the stem cell, you will need to freeze it while the stem cell is still alive.

Within 48 hours of being frozen, the dental pulp needs to have proper blood supply – less than this then, the cell dies.

The director of Dental Regenerative Laboratory, Dr. Peter Murray, says that oral teeth tissue can be regenerated by stem cells from baby teeth, tooth buds, third molars, periodontal tissue or induced pluripotent cells.

There are which can store baby teeth, which recommend removal of the baby teeth by dental professionals; the tooth should not be dangling, because this way it’s very possible it does not contain enough blood supply.

Some companies like Tooth Bank and Bioden offer storage container and at-home collection process; others offer packaging and shipping supplies so that the parents can save their baby teeth themselves.

The teeth are placed in a liquid nitrogen cryopreservation vault, where the stem cells will remain intact and usable for years.
