Just Chew This Root To Prevent Bad Breath And Gum Disease

Brushing your teeth in the morning can be a complete hassle.

It’s not that fun, it makes food taste funny for what seem like hours, and more than anything it is time-consuming.

But brushing your teeth is important to your physical health as well as your social status.

Dried licorice root is an herb sometimes used to treat sore throats, respiratory and digestive problems and other disorders—might be an effective agent to fight the bacteria that cause tooth decay and periodontal disease, according to a recent study.

In the study, published in the Journal of Natural Products, author Stefan Gafner Ph.D., reported that two compounds found in dried licorice root are effective antibacterial substances that can prevent the growth several major bacteria connected with cavities and gum disease.

Licoricidin and licorisoflavan A inhibited two of the major bacteria responsible for dental cavities and two of the bacteria that promote gum disease and licoricidin also inhibited a third gum disease bacterium.

Without their protective layer the bacteria are not able to attach to the teeth and they are left vulnerable, thus helping to decrease the amount of tooth decay and plaque that can form.

How to Use Licorice for Tooth Decay

A soft layer of bark covers the licorice root. If you do have access to fresh licorice root, then select a suitable sized piece of root. You will need to clean the root properly and then chew on one end until the root fibers will come loose and resemble bristles.

If you cannot get a licorice root, you can also use coconut oil as it can also inhibit the growth of the bacteria.

Take note that licorice should not be taken for a period of longer than 4 weeks at a time.

Side Effects of Using Licorice

The side effects associated with over consumption of licorice include a reduction in potassium levels, high blood pressure, paralysis, and brain damage.

If you suffer from kidney disease, heart disease, or high blood pressure then you should consult your physician before including medicinal licorice in your general health regimen.
