Cancer is a disease that you should never take lightly. There are cases where it strikes quickly but often, cancer manifests after years of specific habits.

Good examples of this are smoking and overexposure to ultraviolet rays, which result in lung cancer and skin cancer, respectively.

Experts estimate that more than half the cases of cancer diagnosed in the United States – more than 1.6 million in 2014 – are preventable with lifestyle changes.

It’s probably not something you think about every day, whether or not the foods you are eating could contain carcinogens, but perhaps it’s time to look at what is in our foods that could be causing such a huge number of new cancer patients.

Cancer causing foods are likely in your everyday diet and you didn’t even realize it. 

Here is a list of the top 10 foods that you most likely consume every day that may contain carcinogens or be suspected of causing cancer.

1. Red Meat: Scientists have discovered that preparing meats – especially processed meats like hot dogs – releases a sugar molecule, called Neu5Gc, which  becomes part of your own cells when it’s consumed. Your body then attacks it, resulting in inflammation and a higher cancer risk. Its was revealed on previous studies that there's an increase in breast cancer among women who consumed more red meat. 

2. Processed meats : Bacon, lunch meat, hot dogs, sausages, and other processed meats have been shown to increase the risk of pancreatic cancer by 67% according to study by the University of Hawaii concluded. It reveals that hot dogs commonly contain sodium nitrite, a cancer causing ingredient. Leukemia risks soared a staggering 700% with hot dog consumption. Look for meats free of nitrites to help reduce your risk with these cancer causing foods.

3. Farmed Salmon : If you are avoiding processed meats and red meat, you might find yourself eating more salmon. Well avoid the farmed version because 60% of the salmon consumed come from a farming operation are treated with antibiotics, pesticides, and other carcinogenic chemicals. They also do not contain as much omega-3 as wild salmon. 

4. Refined Sugar:  They are the source of major insulin spikes and feed the growth of cancer cells. Since the majority of the sugar supply in the U.S. is made using genetically modified (GMO) sugar beets, a healthier option is organic honey, coconut sugar, or maple sugar.

5. Refined White Flour : When flour is refined, all nutritional value is removed and then it is bleached with chlorine gas to make it more appealing to consumers. Carbohydrates are converted to sugars by your body, so excessive products that contain white flour can lead to increased production of insulin and thus feeds on cancer cells. Avoid carbohydrates that are highly processed such as white bread, white pasta, white rice, soda & concentrated fruit juices to avoid this reaction in your body.

6. Microwave Popcorn : Those little bags of popcorn are so convenient to just stick in the microwave, you wouldn’t think for a minute that they could be dangerous to your health, but they are. It contains PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) which is a likely carcinogen, another dangerous chemical that can damage the lungs when inhaled.

7. Diet Soda and Carbonated Beverages: Research found out that people who consumed more than one soda per day had a higher risk of stroke than people who did not drink sodas. Filled artificial sweeteners, dyes, and a host of other chemicals, that provide zero nutritional value and can rob your body of the nutrients you get from other foods. Adding “diet” to the label means you’re also consuming aspartame – and that is no better than rat poison.

8. French Fries/Potato Chips : These deep-fried foods uses hydrogenated vegetable oil and then heavily salted. The dangers of hydrogenated oils and the high salt content is alarming for which increases the risk of high blood pressure as well as other health problems. In addition, foods heated above a certain temperature have high levels of acrylamide, a chemical also found in cigarette smoke and industrial building materials. 

9. Genetically Modified Foods (GMOs): These GMO made their way into the majority of our foods. The rapidly growing industry of genetically modified crops are infiltrating our food supply at an alarming rate. GMO foods have been modified to withstand heavy doses of a pesticide called glyphosate OR are engineered to contain a toxin that kills bugs. Look for GMO-free labels whenever possible o rather choose foods that are certified organic.

10. Hydrogenated Oils: They are commonly used to preserve processed foods and keep them shelf-stable. But hydrogenated oils alter the structure and flexibility of cell membranes throughout the body, which can lead to a host of debilitating diseases such as cancer. In fact, there is no safe amount of trans fats in your diet. You can avoid hydrogenated oil but instead choosing  coconut, palm, or olive oil. Organic butter is a better option as well. is listed as “diet,” “light,” or “fat-free” should be avoided.
